Peter DeFoe Receives Honorary Doctor of Laws
Peter Defoe is a proven leader with over 20 years of experience in tribal government. He is the former Chairman and Secretary/Treasurer of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. While in office, he was the President of the Tribal Executive Committee, and served on various committees including the TEC Legislative Sub-Committee, Minnesota Indian Affairs Council, and the Carlton County Drug Task Force Team.
Peter always operated with integrity, reliability, and above all, honesty. He worked to improve the quality of life in our communities and for our people. He worked tirelessly for the Fond du Lac Band, alongside in Cloquet and the surrounding communities, and with those involved in state and national government. Chairman Defoe always worked to make sure the sovereignty of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior was sustained and protected.
Peter was one of the key founders in developing Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College, serving on the task force in the mid-1980’s that recognized the need for the college and helping to establish it. His modesty and strong work ethic have always led his efforts to help all people he has served over his career.
In his younger years he was an accomplished golfer and basketball player, having played in local Indian leagues. He also is a proud United States Navy veteran. He has always been committed to his family, friends, and serving the people of the Fond du Lac Band. He is the father of two daughters and has five grandchildren and is extremely proud of all their accomplishments.
It is with great appreciation, respect, and highest honor that Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College presents the Honorary Doctor of Laws to Mr. Peter J. Defoe on May 19, 2016.
